Los Reyes
January 5th is to the Spanish what 25th December is to the English - Christmas
The evening is an evening full of celebrations. The procession in Garrucha starts at the port with the three kings arriving with gifts. Sweets are thrown into the crowds by the kings, the spanish families then give and receive gifts and have a family evening together. The day of 6th January is a bank holiday.
Día de Andalucia - 28th February.
Mojácar celebrates the official day for the region of Andalucia.
Semana Santa - Easter Week.
This is a week of celebrations and processions. The Spanish celebrate Easter Thursday and Good Friday, the processions and celebrations go on well into the early hours of the morning. The Procesión del Encuentro reaches it's best at the gate of the city.
Fiesta de San Isadro. (May)
This takes place on the nearest Sunday to the 15th of May. Floats covered with flowers, complete with music and dancing are taken from the Village along the beach road, ending up in the small village of Sopalmo.
Moors & Christians. (June)
Held during the weekend which falls closes to 10th. In 2007 this is 8th, 9th & 10th. This is without doubt a fiesta that the locals and holiday makers look forward to with great anticipation, a whole years planning by local residents both spanish and otherwise goes into making this event something not to be missed.
The festival begins on the Friday with the opening of the Moorish & Christian camps (respectively known as 'Kabilas & Cuarteles') and continues all weekend until the final parade on Sunday afternoon which is not to be missed.
Creamfields. (August)
The Creamfields festival takes place in Villaricos during the 2nd weekend in August, attracting approximately 35,000 people from all over europe. The festival originated at the Cream club in Liverpool. The club organizes events around the world, including Australia, Japan & Argentina. Some of the acts headlining the 2006 event included Pet Shop Boys, Miss Kitten, Audio Bullys, Alex Under, Dave Clarke to name a few.
Fiesta de San Augustin (August)
San Augustin is the Saint of Mojácar. The traditional festival in honor of San Augustin is held over several days around 28th August and also includes the closet weekend. Not to be missed is the 'bringing of the water' from the fountain and is offered to the saint for his blessing.
Todos los Santos (November)
All Saints Day, when the people of spain celebrate the lives and memories of loved ones. On this day families gather in the cemeteries with paint, flowers & wine. They tidy and paint the graves of loved ones, decorate them with flowers and candles, and eat and drink to their memory.
Noche Vieja (December)
31st December is celebrated in the normal tradition, good food, good wine and good friends. At every chime of the clock at midnight a lucky grape is consumed, pips and all, and these are washed down with a glass or two of Cava. Cheers!!
